Question: Should I take my dog to an obedience class before training for dog agility?

Answer: Although a class is not necessary, it is important that your dog knows basic obedience commands like sit, down, stay, and come. It doesn’t have to be 100% correct all the time but it is a good place to start. Basic dog agility training is being taught to lead, so there has to be a foundation of listening and following commands in place before starting.

Question: Will my dog be without a leash?

Answer: Yes, it is important that you train your dog without a leash. A good start is to master the “come” command. Dog agility competitions have hundreds upon hundreds of distractions from other dogs to the fans. Therefore, it is important that you master the “come” command even with distractions all around.

Question: How can I keep my dog interested in dog agility training?

Answer: Dogs love treats and rewards for accomplishing a task. They know if they learn a new trick or complete a correct command that there is a good chance that they will receive a reward. For that reason, it is important to keep your dog’s favorite treat or toy around at all times.

Question: Is dog agility training easy?

Answer: Absolutely not, but it does not mean you can fun doing it. Dog agility about more than just winning, it’s about the quality time spent with your favorite pet. There are plenty of benefits for both you and your dog besides a trophy. Be patient, and have fun.

Question: I have a nervous dog, will she be able to overcome her fears?

Answer: Yes, dog agility training is a great way for nervous dogs to become more social. This could take some time though. Be patient, and you’re your dog into social interactions.

Question: Can more than one handler train the same dog?

Answer: It is strongly recommended that there is only one handler per dog while training for dog agility competitions. A dog needs to be fully in-tuned with one person.
